We had to have our ancient black lab put down today. She was thirteen, which is very old for a lab, had severe cataracts, was incontinent, and had arthritis. Sometime we had to help her to her feet, and often when she moved she would yelp in pain. Today, she started shaking – convulsions? – and lost control of both her bladder and her bowels.
We put extra blankets in the back of the van and took her to one of the local vets. We don’t generally use this clinic, but it is the only one in the county that has its own crematorium.
The vet was very kind, very understanding, and assured us we were doing the right thing.
It still hurts, and Blazer is wandering around, looking for his big sister.
