Too Close to Home

This morning, there was a shooting at the Panera across the street from the Y we use.

Panera staff had called 911 because there was a patron who had been there most of the morning, mumbling to himself, and just acting “off”. One family said they had moved to another section because he made them uneasy.

When the officer arrived, the man pulled a gun from his pocket and shot him in the head, then ran out of the building and across the street. Other officers arrived, and based on the descriptions given them, chased the man into the parking lot of an apartment complex about a half-mile away.

The man got into a car, and shots were exchanged. A second deputy was injured, and the man was killed.

No word on who any of the people were, or the condition of the more seriously wounded officer.

The Mall in Columbia

Columbia is on the far side of Baltimore from us, located about mid-way between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

As of 5:20 – it is now 5:45 here – the police report there were three people dead, including the gunman. It appears to have been a domestic situation, although no further information has been released . (Haven’t these people ever heard of divorce lawyers?) There are reports of others having been wounded, perhaps by shotgun pellets.

It is a sad, sad commentary on the world in which we live that everyone knew exactly what to do. Shelter in place; go into a stockroom or restroom and barricade the doors.

Two employees, male and female, in their 20s. Gunman not yet identified, as he was carrying so much ammunition the police have to “use great caution” to move his body.
